The House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-GLA cksburg (in Danish: Schleswig-Holsten-Sonderborg-Lyksborg), also called Casa de Gla cksburg, having its origin in Gla cksburg, a city in northern Germany, is the reigning dynasty in Denmark and Norway and was the home of the kings of Greece to the abolition of the monarchy in this country. Also among its members, Queen Sofia of Greece and the Duke of Edinburgh Philip. Is a branch of the Oldenburg dynasty, descended from the royal Danish King Christian III.
This particular branch of the Kingdom of Denmark comes from the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck. The latter then called Gla cksburg and change his title according to the wishes of Duke Frederick William of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-GLA cksburg, who was married to Princess Louise Caroline of Hesse-Kassel, a granddaughter of King Frederick V of Denmark.
Neither Beck nor the Duchy of Gla cksburg was its sovereign territory - they were the fief to the Dukes of Schleswig and Holstein - the King of Denmark and (before 1773) to the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp.
Christian IX, the fourth son of Frederick William. was chosen by King Frederick VII of Denmark who had no children, to be his heir, as was the case with Cristian cousin of Frederick, Louise of Hesse. William, second son of the heir to the crown prince and Princess Louise Christian, was elected King of Greece on March 30, 1863 to succeed the deposed representative house Wittelsbach Otto of Greece and took the name George I of Greece. Her father became King of Denmark taking the name of Christian IX on November 15, 1863. Prince Charles, second son of Frederick VIII of Denmark, the eldest son of Christian IX, becomes King of Norway on November 18, 1905 called Haakon VII of Norway. The daughters of Christian IX of Denmark and Alexandra Dagmar of Denmark (who later would be called Maria Feodorovna), married Edward VII of the United Kingdom and Alexander III of Russia, respectively. This means that for 1914, the descendants of King Christian IX had taken almost as many European thrones as the descendants of Queen Victoria.
